Conneting synthetic biology across the North East.

NEUK has been bringing together the people who build with biology in the North East since 2019 — researchers, students and companies.

What NEUK is for

Our aim is to bring scientists together across the North East to foster knowledge sharing and collaboration.

Academics and industry, together

Bringing company scientists and academic researchers into the same room; not at separate events for separate audiences.

Collaborations that start in person

Most useful collaborations begin as a conversation over a drink after a talk. The format exists to make those conversations happen.

A network for ECRs and PhD students

Early-career researchers get a platform to present to people outside their own department, and gain a realistic view of careers beyond academia.

Programme

Seminars run during term. Free to attend, and open to anyone — you do not need to be at the host institution.

    Who has spoken

Group leaders from Imperial, Cambridge, Edinburgh and Shenzhen have presented to NEUK, alongside PhD students and founders from the region.

    The North East network

Synthetic biology here is genuinely distributed — biotechnology in the built environment, industrial biotechnology, programmable biological matter and computational design sit in different institutions. NEUK is the layer that connects them.

    Where we are so far

Figures updated at the end of each academic term.

    For companies and investors

The North East has a deep bioscience base and a thin pipeline between that base and the companies who could use it. NEUK is a cheap way to fix part of that.

Companies including InvenireX, NunaBio, GitLife Biotech, MarraBio and Gains.Bio have presented at NEUK seminars.
